In 2020, green tea, aronia juice, pomegranate juice and elderberry juice were examined in different virological laboratories (in-vitro) in Stuttgart and at the University of Ulm. In the various series of tests, aronia juice, pomegranate juice and green tea showed their direct antiviral effects against SARS-CoV-2. These also (and in addition elderberry juice) showed a very good effect against the flu virus (influenza A “swine flu” strain) and against a modified vaccinia virus, which is used as a general test virus example for enveloped viruses. Only aronia juice was effective against the adenovirus as an example of a non-enveloped virus. The result has been submitted for publication to a generally recognized scientific journal and is still under review, but has already been pre-published internationally. Because exactly the same juices and the same green tea were used in all of these experiments, an approximate comparison of the sensitivity of the viruses to these agents can be seen from this series of experiments: the new corona virus SARS-CoV-2 is approximately a factor of 1000 less sensitive than the swine flu virus and approximately as sensitive or insensitive as the test virus (modified vaccinia virus Ankara). The non-enveloped test virus adenovirus is the least sensitive to the agents tested here.

Green tea: 98%, aronia juice: 98%, pomegranate juice: 80%, elderberry juice: 0%

Green tea: 99.9%, aronia juice: 99.99%, pomegranate juice: 99.99%, elderberry juice: 99.99%

Against Adenovirus, the antiviral effect of the agents with a contact time with the virus of 5 minutes was for:

Green tea: 0%, aronia juice: 93%, pomegranate juice: 0%, elderberry juice: 0%

Evaluation

Across all tests, aronia juice had the strongest effect of all the products tested. This is most noticeable in the effect against the very resistant and non-enveloped adenovirus with a 93% reduction in infectivity, where the other agents were ineffective. With the other 3 viruses tested, none of the other remedies were stronger than aronia juice. Since this is not a clinical study on humans, but rather an in-vitro study in the laboratory, the transfer to use in humans should still be assessed with reservations. Nevertheless, concrete recommendations for action can be derived from the study and further considerations that can be implemented immediately and have a preventative effect. It is desirable to verify the hopeful results of the laboratory study using a clinical study on humans or at least to confirm them through systematic observations of test subjects using scientifically evaluated documentation of specific applications. In the meantime, antiviral effectiveness against the current corona virus SARS-CoV-2 has also been shown for black tea. Cistus, sage, thyme and other teas should also have such effects due to their ingredients and the anti-viral properties found so far. However, we are not yet aware of any corresponding publication.

It is therefore plausible to try to reduce the risk and frequency of infection/transmission with aronia juice and other such unproblematic herbal remedies. Not only in the current pandemic situation with SARS-CoV-2, but more generally when there is a risk of colds and flu.

Teezubereitungen:

My personal recommendation for making tea: For green or black tea, for example, you should proceed as follows: Steep 3g of tea leaves approx. 0.1g of ascorbic acid (= vitamin C powder) in 300 ml of freshly boiled water for 4 minutes while stirring leave and then strain. Other teas (cistus, thyme, sage, etc.) should steep longer (5-10 minutes depending on how finely chopped the leaves are. The larger the leaves, the longer they steep). Infusion bag teas: Always move while steeping, then 5 minutes is enough.
